Phytopurification is an individual wastewater treatment system. It concerns dwellings that do not have a sewer system. Focus on this ecological alternative to the septic tank.

What is domestic wastewater?

They are made up of several things: - Gray water: water from the bathroom, washing machine, hand basin ... They contain detergents. - Kitchen waters, which contain grease and detergents. -Valves: these are toilet waters. The discharge of sewage can be avoided by using dry toilets. It only remains to treat gray water and kitchen water, which is called household water.

When to install an individual sanitation system?

Since 2012, a house not connected to the sewer must be connected to an individual autonomous sanitation installation such as a septic tank, for example. It is this facility that treats household wastewater discharged by the family. Sanitizing wastewater improves sanitation and protects the natural environment. Indeed, our wastewater has too often polluted nature, especially in rural areas.

Why choose phyto-purification?

Conventional individual purification systems (septic tank then spreading or sand filter) have a limited lifespan due to clogging: 10 years maximum for spreading, 8 years maximum for the sand filter, or even 2 years with a clay soil. Phyto-purification represents an ecological, economic, sustainable and aesthetic alternative to conventional purification systems.

How does phytopurification work?

The principle of phyto-purification is simple. Wastewater flows to a pool of plants. Aerobic bacteria, which need oxygen and do not give off bad odors, transform organic matter into mineral matter assimilable by plants. In return, the aquatic plants in the basin supply oxygen through their roots to the plants. Aquatic plants play another role in the purification of wastewater: their roots produce a wide variety of colloidal substances capable of processing phosphates and nitrates. In addition, the mechanical action of the wind on the plants moves the roots, which aerate the substrate, preventing clogging.

What are the stages of phyto-purification?

The water undergoes a pretreatment by passing through a straw filter, a vertical bed planted with reeds or an all-water tank, in order to remove the largest particles and part of the fats. This also prevents clogging of the distribution pipes. Then it passes through several horizontal flow filter basins, planted with plant species capable of absorbing polluting loads (bamboo, mallets, marsh iris, sedge ...). Finally the treatment is refined thanks to a terminal pond (or a ditch planted with semi-aquatic species) which promotes the increase of biodiversity and quickly becomes a strong point of the garden.

Is phyto-purification effective?

Yes, phyto-purification is particularly effective in terms of purification, provided that you use biodegradable soaps and detergents. The water discharged by the system is actually recycled and can be easily reused at the end of the journey to water the garden. The fact of using dry toilets is an asset for the effectiveness of phytopurification. In fact, flushing alone produces 3 to 4 times more polluting load than the kitchen, the bathroom and the washing machine combined. Eliminating sewage water divides the surface of the sanitation system by three.

What are the other benefits of phytopurification?

The aquatic pools are aesthetic, colorful and lively, and allow the family to take responsibility for their discharges. In addition, the water from the warm end pond loaded with microorganisms directly assimilated by plants is excellent for the garden and represents a good saving in water. The pools offer a reasonable footprint in rural or peri-urban areas (from 1 to 5 m² per person) and use the slopes rather than the flat. Finally, the investment is reasonable.

What steps should be taken to install a phytopurification system?

A declaration of installation of an autonomous sanitation device must be obtained from the town hall of your municipality. In this file, you will explain the characteristics of your land as well as the principles of the treatment system that you have chosen. To put the odds on your side, it is best to call on a design office which will support your request.
